Stress Relieving

Cincinnati Steel Treating (CST) offers stress relieving heat treatments for a vast swath of metal products including cast iron, welded fabrications, steel components, and non-ferrous metal parts including aluminum, copper, and titanium. CST can perform stress relieving operations in accordance with multiple quality systems including ISO 9001, IATF 1649, and ITAR.

Cincinnati Steel Treating (CST) provides quality stress relieving services from our well-equipped metal treating facility in S.W. Ohio. Stress relieving of forgings, castings and weldments is accomplished in one of our three car bottom furnaces.  Special stress relieving cycles can be accomplished in one of our smaller pit furnaces.

Stress relieving and annealing are very similar heat treatment processes.  The temperatures used as well as the thermal processing steps followed are often the same.  The essential difference between the two is the goal of the heat treatment.  Annealing is used to soften or alter the grain structure of metal for improved formability and machinability, while stress relieving is performed for exactly the reason that the name suggests – to relieve the stresses inside the material.  Stresses can be introduced into metal components from a large number of manufacturing processes including machining, welding, or thermal processes such as quenching.  Heating the metal to a high temperature (i.e. stress relieving) facilitates recovery and recrystallation in the microstucture of the material, removing the residual stresses.  Typical temperatures used in a stress relief heat treatment are between 1100 and 1250°F.

CST can stress relieve parts that weigh up to 10,000 pounds and that are as large as 8 ft. wide x 6 ft. tall x 17 ft. long. A wide selection of furnaces is also available for running special cycles, including processing under protective atmosphere.

Whether stress relieving aluminum, steel, stainless steel, or titanium, CST offers excellent value for your stress relieving services.

Stress Relieving Applications

Flame HardeningStress relieving is a necessary step in many manufacturing processes.  Welded fabrications have to be stress relieved after the completion of welding.  Forgings, castings, or extrusions that have complex shapes have to be stress relieved before they can be heat treated.  Metal components that have a lot of stock machined or ground off of them have to be stress relieved.  Flat sheet that is deep drawn into a shape that exceeds the formability limits of the steel has to be stress relieved in between stamping operations.

Many of these stress relieving applications are governed by strict quality specifications.  Military, aerospace, or automotive parts in particular have complicated procedures that spell out exactly how a stress relieving operation is to be performed.  CST is experienced in all of these.  We have the ability to stress relieve a part in an AMS 2750 certified furnace, and we can provide real time data from therocouples attached directly to the part.  Our certifications can be used to show compliance with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and ITAR requirements.  Our metallurgists can provide guidance and expertise on the best procedures to use in stress relieving a part.  Consult with one of our metallurgists today.
