Long Part Applications

Cincinnati Steel Treating (CST) offers heat treatments for long parts that must be processed to produce minimum distortion. CST is the industry leader in long parts applications.

There are many challenges to heat treating long, narrow, thin parts.  Such parts have a tendency to bow and distort, and they are difficult to quench effectively.  Straightening operations are commonly required, and such straightening can be tricky if the parts are made out of exotic steels like tool steels, stainless steels, or other high alloy steels.  Tempering is also a challenge on long parts.  Knowledge of how best to fixture a long part is vital to being able to inhibit, reduce, or eliminate distortion.  CST is the industry leader in understanding how to overcome these challenges.

Heat Treatment of Long Parts

Tool Steel ProcessingHeat Treatment of long, narrow, thin parts offers a unique challenge.  The solid state, austenite-to-martensite phase transformation that leads to the classical hardening reaction in steel creates distortion through the volumetric change that occurs between phases.  This volumetric change inevitably leads to bowing or bending of long parts.  Long parts heat treated in a horizontal position will experience this on a much greater scale compared with those that are heat treated in a vertical orientation.

Cincinnati Steel Treating (CST) heat treats long parts in the vertical orientation.  CST has two deep, pit furnaces that long parts can be hung inside of, and CST has a deep oil quench tank that can quench these long parts.  CST also has special fixturing that can aid in reducing distortion through tempering.  CST has built up a wealth of knowledge regarding how best to fixture, or constrain, long parts during tempering to reduce distortion, and our special Eitel Press is capable of restoring long, round parts to within 0.005″ TIR.

Long Parts Heat Treatment Capabilities

Cincinnati Steel Treating (CST) has two pit furnaces that can heat treat long, thin, narrow parts up to 168″ long.  A variety of heat treatments can be performed in either pit furnace including carburizing, carbo-nitriding, neutral hardening, annealing, and stress relieving.  Both furnaces are certified to ASM 2750 up to 1850°F.

CST has a straightening department that is capable of hot straightening.  CST has experience performing hot-straightening on various tool steels including D1, D2, A6, A8, H11, or H13.  CST also has special fixturing that allows for air quenching and clamp tempering.  These methods allow for the correction of bending or bowing of long parts, and the two presses in the straightening department are capable of fixing seriously bent or bowed parts.

Long Parts Heat Treatment Applications

High Temperature Alloy Part being QuenchedCincinnati Steel Treating (CST) has heat treated a variety of long parts including slitter blades, knife blades, gear racks, machine rams, shaft pinions, and bar stock.  These parts have gone into tractors, automobiles, slitters, industrial shears, and beverage can makers.  CST has heat treated these parts to various specifications including those from the military, automotive, oil and gas, and food and beverage industries.  CST is ISO 9000 and IATF 16949 certified as well as ITAR compliant.  Regular audits are conducted of our processes to ensure a consistent, repeatable heat treatment that produces a minimum of distortion.  Consult with one of our experts today regarding heat treating long parts.
