Annealing

Cincinnati Steel Treating offers annealing heat treatments for a great variety of metal products including cast iron, welded fabrications, steel components, and non-ferrous metal parts including aluminum and copper. CST can perform annealing operations within multiple quality systems including ISO 14001, IATF 1649, and ITAR.

Cincinnati Steel Treating provides quality annealing services from our well-equipped metal treating facility in S.W. Ohio. Annealing, of forgings, castings and weldments is accomplished in one of our three car bottom furnaces.

Annealing is used to soften or alter the grain structure for improved formability and machinability.

We run parts weighing up to 10,000 pounds and as large as 8 ft. wide x 6 ft. tall x 17 ft. long at temperatures from 900°F to 1850°F. A wide selection of furnaces is also available for running special cycles, including processing under protective atmospheres.

Whether annealing aluminum, steel or annealing metal parts made from a variety of alloys, CST offers excellent value and exceptional annealing services.

Annealing versus other Heat Treatments

Annealing is often confused with stress relieving and tempering. All three heat treatments serve on a very basic level to soften a part, increase its ductility/toughness, and decrease its residual stress. The concept that distinguishes annealing from the other heat treatments is that the goal of annealing is to soften a metal specifically for subsequent manufacturing processes such as cold forming or machining.

Annealing Steel

Annealing SteelCincinnati Steel Treating (CST) offers annealing services to machine shops, fabricators, and gear manufacturers to assist them in improving the machinability and formability of their steel parts. Annealing in steel is a heat treatment that involves heating the part to a temperature range between 1150°F

and 1650°F. Annealing cycles can be classified as subcritical (temperatures below the Ac1 temperature), process (temperatures between the Ac1 and Ac3 temperatures), and full (temperatures over the Ac3). CST offers a wide amount of knowledge and expertise in choosing the correct annealing cycle required for the steel parts under consideration.

Annealing Aluminum

Annealing AluminumCincinnati Steel Treating (CST) offers annealing cycles to anneal any aluminum grades to a specified hardness or level of ductility. These heating cycles include those that produce full annealing to the -O condition in one of our certified furnaces.

Annealing is performed on aluminum parts in multiple industries including automotive, energy, power transmission, and aerospace. The purpose of annealing aluminum is to increase softness and ductility, most commonly to improve formability in the aluminum parts after extrusion or cold work. CST is certified to anneal Aluminum parts to follow multiple quality systems including IATF 16949, ITAR, and ISO 9001. Typical temperatures that aluminum parts are annealed to are 500 – 775°F. Ask one of CST’s heat treat specialists about how to anneal any aluminum grade in question.

Annealing Copper

Annealing CopperCincinnati Steel Treating (CST) offers annealing services for multiple copper alloys. Annealing is performed on copper for the same reasons that it is performed on steel and aluminum, to increase softness, ductility, and toughness. This aids in the machinability and formability of copper alloy parts.

Annealing can also be carried out above the recrystallization temperature to achieve a specific grain size. Annealing temperatures for copper alloys range from 900 – 1400°F. CST has annealed copper alloy parts including copper coils of wire and copper forgings. CST is capable of controlling the rate of heat up, cool down, and the type of protective atmosphere used. Temperature charts can be provided upon request.
